The conclusions drawn by the National Environmental Forum

The XV Republican Ecological Forum in Novogrudok is finished. The two-day program of the forum turned out to be very intense and focused on the implementation of the President’s orders to clean up and landscape communities, create favorable living conditions in cities, develop an efficient waste management system, preserve biological and landscape diversity for generations to come and other important initiatives regarding the environment.

At the plenary session and forum sections, many concrete practical proposals were made that will become a good basis for ensuring the further sustainable development of small towns in the Republic of Belarus. The forum exhibition was an opportunity to present environmental protection developments, innovations, and also pertinent investment projects. At the plenary session, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus Andrei Khudyk, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Marianna Schetkina and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belarus Alexandra Solovieva spoke. The guests of the forum could participate in a variety of activities including attending specialized scientific and practical seminars and, a youth platform. The forum also showcased a green school for a green future, and the opening of the first street in the city equipped with a new system of “smart” LED lighting.

The exposition of the Republican Centre for State Ecological Expertise and Advanced Training of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the project “Removing Barriers to Wind Power Development in Belarus” earned the main award of the forum’s exhibition and aroused great interest among schoolchildren. The children greatly enjoyed peddling on a bicycle, which generated energy that recharged mobile devices and rotated a scale copy of a wind turbine. Living in Novogrudok (or nearby), the silhouettes of modern wind power equipment can be watched every day. These fascinating structures not only generate electricity, but also turn the region into a flawless image of an ecologically clean area, developing modern technologies and supporting the current global trend of a shift from hydrocarbons to renewable energy. Furthermore, local schoolchildren already understand that ecologically clean energy production, the recycling of waste and introduction of electric transport is of the highest priority. Only the widespread implementation of the principles of sustainable development can have a positive environmental effect. Maybe in 20-30 years, children playing with cars will no longer make the growling sound of fossil fuel engines.

At the solemn closing ceremony of the forum, Andrey Khudyk thanked all participants for their effective work and noted that the forum showed how many people in our country are not indifferent to the state of the environment, and able to appreciate and take care of the beauty of their native land. The final chord of the ceremony was the awarding by the Minister of the best environmental specialists of the country, organizations and enterprises, who made a significant contribution to the cause of environmental protection and the rational use of natural resources.
