The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus is actively developing international cooperation in the field of environmental protection and is involved in the consolidation of efforts to address global and regional environmental problems.
The MNREP is working on the accession of the Republic of Belarus to the multilateral environmental agreements. Among the most important Conventions, to which our country has acceded, it is important to note the Conventions on the issues of climate change, the protection of the ozone layer, biodiversity, control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes, control of desertification and land degradation.
In the course of such international cooperation, the MNREP effectively attracts external funding for the implementation of many environmental projects in our country. Over the years, this cooperation has formed stable relations with reliable partners in the implementation of environmental initiatives, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Commission, World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), environmental agencies and environmental funds of the countries with special assistance programs.
More and more organizations both at the international and local levels are being involved in the process of implementation of environmental initiatives.
It should be noted that RUE “Grodnoenergo” makes a significant contribution to the implementation of environmental projects in the Republic of Belarus.
It was “Grodnoenergo” that took an active part in solving the problems with resistant contaminants on the programme of international technical assistance project “Persistent Organic Pollutant Stock Management” (an umbrella project on the management of solid household waste in the Republic of Belarus). As part of the project activities for 2011 – 2013, an environmentally sound destruction of more than 200 tons of PCBs and PCB-containing waste was carried out (according to the National Plan of Implementation of the Stockholm Convention on the environmentally sound management of waste).
[PCBs - polychlorinated biphenyls, persistent chemicals, which are among the most dangerous pollutants]
RUE “Grodnoenergo” has been involved in the successful expansion of the use of RES in their own production of electricity and promotes eco-oriented focus in all spheres of activity.
The company is “in tune with the times” and promotes the use of biogas energy, makes extensive use of hydropower (Grodno HPP with the installed capacity of 17 MW has been commissioned).
“Grodnoenergo” possesses the first in the Republic of Belarus large wind turbine with the capacity of 1.5 MW (near the settlement Grabniki, Novogrudok district) with modern features and a high average annual installed capacity utilization rate (30-33%).
At the present time, on that same site (near the settlement Grabniki) another 5 plants of similar capacity – 1.5 MW each – are being installed. Thus, in the near future the construction of a wind farm with a total installed capacity of 9 MW (including the wind turbine of 1.5 MW in operation since 2011) will be completed.
RUE "Grodnoenergo" is now ready to contribute to the implementation of the international technical assistance project “Removing Barriers to Wind Power Development in Belarus”. For example, on March 31, 2016 a business meeting of the Project staff and representatives of “Grodnoenergo” was held to study the experience of execution of projects on the construction of wind farms in the Republic of Belarus and the search for potential partners for the project implementation.
