A meeting of the Coordination Board of the international technical assistance project “Removing Barriers to Wind Power Development in Belarus” was held in Minsk on 14 July, 2016.
Besides the members of the Board, the meeting was attended by invited specialists from various organizations, ministries and agencies (the MNREP, UNDP, BelGIE, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, Gosstandart (State Committee for Standardization), General Staff and others).
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Sergei Khrushchev, having described to the audience the current state and the potential renewable energy development prospects in general and wind energy in particular, stated the special importance of the project “Removing Barriers to Wind Power Development in Belarus”.
In her address to the audience, Ekaterina Paniklova, the UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Belarus, pointed out that the Paris agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed on 22 April, 2016 (one of the signing parties of which is the Republic of Belarus), recognizes the need to further encourage the development of renewable energy sources and reduce the share of fossil fuel consumption. In view of the long-term plans for climate protection, wind energy acquires a strategic role in this process.
Marina Belous, the manager of the project “Removing Barriers to Wind Power Development in Belarus”, made a presentation that revealed the results of the project in the first half of 2016, and also presented the planned activities for the second half of the year.
During the meeting, the attendees listened to the reports, discussed the work done and future stages of the project implementation, offered their visions of solving problematic issues in the development of wind power in Belarus and expressed their intention to provide active support to the project.
