The global wind power today is at the most advanced stage of its development, and prospects are very promising. The experts estimate that only the energy of sea winds may in the future generate about 5000 TWh of electricity per year worldwide, approximately a third of current electricity consumption.
Last year Germany added 818 MW of installed capacity of offshore wind farms into its grid, as a result of which the country’s wind power has reached the value of 4.11 GW.
The capacities of offshore wind farms added in 2016 are characterized by a small volume compared to 2015, when the introduced capacity made up a record 2.26 GW. Partially, the rapid expanding capacities in 2015 is accounted for due to the large quantity of completed projects in 2014 that have not yet been connected to the grid. And the installed capacity of turbines not connected to the grid made up a total of 123 MW in 2016.

In 2016 the energy generation from the German offshore wind farms was increased to 13 TWh (terawatt-hours) compared to the 8.3 TWh generated in 2015 that has become equivalent to the combined electric power demand of the largest city of Berlin and the state of Brandenburg.
According to the estimates of the Deutsche WindGuard Company, the capacities of offshore wind power will be expanded this (2017) year at least to 1.4 GW, and further the rates of increase will average 1 GW per year up to 2019.
According to official information, Germany in April 2017 will conduct its auction for the construction of offshore wind farms with a capacity of 1.55 GW. And in the latest tenders for the construction of offshore wind farms in the Netherlands and Denmark the course of gradual reduction of prices in this sector is observed, the similar tendency is to be expected in Germany. However, unlike Denmark or the Netherlands, this country will still have to bear extra costs to provide power supplies from offshore wind turbines in the future, since the most significantly distant from the coast areas are characterized by the strongest winds here.
Within the framework of the review of legislation in the middle of 2016 touching renewable energy sphere, the policy of refusal from fixed feed-in tariffs was launched. The experts criticize the novel on renewable energy sources also in terms of restrictions of expanding capacities, setting a strict framework for the annual volumes on the construction of RES, and they are apprehensive about that such measures will become an additional load for the creation of offshore wind farms, which subsequently will increase their cost for Germany. Thus, for further energy cost reduction, the locomotive country of the EU economy needs a trustworthy political assistance of the large-scale expansion of wind power, both offshore and onshore.
